We are given limited time on this earth to experience the depth of being human and the breadth of our spiritual natures. Why then, do we often choose to place inordinate amounts of time and energy into patterns that immobile our professional and personal growth?
It’s like trying to convince someone to take the path that is made of quicksand because its a shorter path. Well, I’m rather certain that while it may be shorter, you are going to end up stuck.
One of the habits that lead to a place of stuck-ness is the paralyzing pattern of self-questioning. Not only can self-questioning keep you from action but it often feeds anxiety and indecision. None of these are characteristics of a successful empire builder or business owner. Your business deserves clarity, strategic plans for momentum, and a clear path to innovation and achievement.
Questioning everything for long periods of time is your way of creating space to stay in the (illusion) of comfort that inertia gives you. As long as you question, and then re-question your insights (like double-fried french fries), you give yourself the illusion that you are taking action because you feel like you’re making a concerted effort.
Yes, you’re right – questioning is a verb, but does it get you anywhere OR does it give you exactly what you want?
Certainly, you should question from a place of discernment, but there comes a time that questioning just becomes a realllllllly bad habit and keeps you stuck! The most successful people on the planet – you know, the ones who have what you want – are quick decision makers and make a ton of decisions each day to move them forward.
If they can do it, you can too! Why? Because it’s an innate skill that we all have.
So, if they’re doing it, and you’re not, it means that you actually like remaining in inertia. Which also means that you don’t get to complain about a situation that you are *choosing* to create (yeah, a hard truth, isn’t it?).
You can’t tell me all of the things that you want to manifest and then remain in indecision.
It’s incongruent and is abdication of personal responsibility (which is what people with really bad habits, even addictions do).
To combat perpetuating immobility, I wanted to share 3 simple ways to move through this space more seamlessly and stop questioning yourself. Doing so creates space for infinite possibility and radical action.
#1 Own Your Truth
It sounds simple. Yet so many of us use questioning as a way to self-sabotage. Based on life experience and upbringing, many of us learned to be ashamed and to question our truth; that part of us that knew intuitively what our higher purpose was and how to expand fully into it. Instead, we learned techniques to push it down, to hide it, to forget about it because not living our purpose is ultimately one of the most painful ways to survive.
But you now have the right and the choice to own your truth. You have a right to stop questioning what you’ve always known and what presently feels in alignment with your purpose. You have permission to say STOP/NO/I DO NOT CONSENT to the endless cycle of self-doubt and awaken the space of clarity and decision.
#2 Release the Mind
For the most part, continual questioning is a function of the mind and the ego. When we recognize this, we give space to let go of the minds busyness (which simply creates a distraction) and awaken our heart space. In the space of our heart, our frequency is dialed in to opportunity, self-forgiveness, potential, and a desire to take action when needed.
Releasing the mind comes with practice and includes methods such a meditation and mindfulness, journaling, expressing through art, deep breathing, and grounding within the body through movement such as yoga or exercise.
#3 Be Discerning with Questions
As I mentioned previously, questions can actually be a powerful gift when it comes to exponential spiritual development. But the difference between is knowing the time, place, and method of asking questions. Don’t let the questions control you! Are you intentionally inviting them in? Or are you playing questions on a loop based on habit? When you ask questions, are you hearing answers? If not, you’ve probably been in a place of immobility for far too long and you may not recognize that its been of your choosing.
And so, learn to ask questions that demand answers and that provide guidance. And learn to graciously accept those answers, assimilate them, and then move on. Movement is what creates momentum and momentum creates energy and energy becomes YOURS to harness.
I’d ask that you also remember this: while you most certainly aren’t obligated to give your time over to negativity and self-doubt, do take care to honor those spaces that are challenging or dark. This is where true transitions, change, and healing happen. But be cognizant that your process is intentional.
Remember Newton’s Law of Inertia – an object at rest remains at rest AND an object in motion remains in motion. Which side of inertia will you be on?
