I’m going to take you back for a minute; to a time of wonder and delight.
Bear with me. I promise I’ll make it relevant to the challenges, and rewards, of being a successful business leader. And I’ll leave you with details on a new dynamic offering I am so proud to unveil.
Do you remember building sand castles or blanket forts as a child? Perhaps you created elaborate clubhouses in the backyard and invited all of the neighbor kids over to experience the enchantment.
Take a moment to close your eyes and remember the intricacies of that experience. Tap into your inner child self and recall the way your heart soared at the ideas you held and how it felt to bring those dreams to life. Think about how time seemed to stand still when you were exercising your creativity and making magic come alive.
For most of us, these experiences occurred without much hesitation. We didn’t second guess ourselves and our ideas. We generally didn’t settle for the easiest or quickest fix. We worked for hours on end, perhaps skipping lunch or continuing on well after sunset. Maybe we enthusiastically employed the help of friends or family.
The desire to achieve results intrinsically drove us in our creative projects.
If you were like me, you weren’t satisfied with a few tiny sandcastles. You added on to that castle, creating a majestic, multi-level structure complete with a moat, a drawbridge, and decorated with kelp and seashells.
You didn’t find yourself resenting your fort or clubhouse. Rather, it energized you to think of all of the ways you could improve upon it.
Why, then, have we lost the confidence we had a child to take endeavors to the next level?
As business owners, many of us struggle with feeling stuck at a certain level of our business. We become distressed with our progress, bogged down by comparing ourselves to others and questioning our self-worth, and otherwise disengaged.
I know I’m not alone when I raise my hand and say that I have been there as well. Many times over! Frustrated and entangled in my own negative energy, I’ve even wanted to just give up.
The good news is I can now share how to empower yourself to move past your stuck place and unlock the next milestone of your business.
These few quick tips will help you intentionally and successfully revitalize your business performance.
1. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day.
This wise old adage holds up, even when it comes to being an innovative and conscious thought leader. Just like building a home, a business requires a strong foundation. It behooves you to occasionally take inventory of where your business is headed, prioritize your projects, and allow yourself a healthy perspective on patience. Remember, however, that patience doesn’t equal complacency! Check in with your heart and mind and ensure you aren’t making excuses to hold yourself back.
2. Reframing Your Perception.
What we tell ourselves about our abilities holds much power. This can be to our advantage as well as to our detriment. Instead of saying “I’m not good at ______/I’ve never been able to ______”, try literally reframing your pessimistic thinking by adding this simple key phrase to the beginning of such proclamations: UP UNTIL NOW. So, UP UNTIL NOW you weren’t good at strategic planning. UP UNTIL NOW you weren’t able to get a good understanding of social media marketing. This little phrase can make a big difference in what we believe to be true about ourselves and can spark abundant change.
3. Get Out of Your Own Way!
Often, we become our own biggest source of frustration. We start to think small, contracting our worldview into an almost windowless wall of fears and comparisons and what ifs. I liken it to wandering down a beautiful mountain trail and finding yourself disoriented and lost. Too often, we stick our head in a map and struggle to make sense of direction. We rely on something else to tell us where to go. Getting out of your own way means to fold the map neatly into your pocket (don’t worry, its still there to refer to), taking a deep breath, and assessing your position. It’s about relying on your instincts, your intuition, and allowing yourself to ascertain your own divine path.
4. Make Your Work Meaningful and Stay Curious.
Remember how I talked about sand castles and forts? One of the reasons we could strategize and build on those for hour or days is because they held deep meaning to us. We allowed ourselves to continually cultivate curiosity. When our work begins to feel overwhelming, or our success is stalled, ask yourself if you are still engaging in something meaningful that speaks to your sacred purpose. Find ways to look at your work in a new light and from different angles. Seek the places in which it needs to be nourished. You may be surprised at how new life will sprout beneath what seemed bereft of vitality.
